我得先说一句：“首先的英语怎么说？”这问题，远比想象中复杂。
是的，看上去只是一句小短语，可真要用舒服、用自然、用得像个活人——就没那么机械了。

我先把结论丢出来，给赶时间的人：

“首先”最常见、最安全的英语表达：
✅ first
✅ first of all
✅ to begin with
✅ for a start（偏口语）
✅ in the first place（有时带点“抱怨”或“强调”的味道）

但如果你只记住这些词，还不够。
真正让人感觉“英语思维在线”的，是你怎么用、在什么场景下用、语气怎么落地。

下面我就以一个经常被读者追着问英语表达的普通人视角，聊聊我和“首先的英语”之间，这些年不算惊心动魄、但还挺有画面感的故事。

我第一次认真意识到“Firstly 不太对劲”，是在参加一个全英文汇报的时候。

那天我照着大学作文模版，一本正经地说：

“Firstly, we did a market research. Secondly, we analyzed the data. Thirdly, we drew the conclusion…”

说完我看见一个老外同事，脸上那种“礼貌且挣扎”的微笑。
散会之后他过来拍了拍我：

“You don’t have to say firstly, secondly, thirdly like a robot.
Just say first , second , third . Sounds more natural.”

那一刻我其实有点脸红。
因为我突然意识到：课本里的“Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly”在真实的口语场景里，很少有人连着这么用。
不是错，只是太“作文味儿”。

所以如果你是要写邮件、做汇报、和同事聊天，想表达“首先”：

✅ 更自然的用法
- First, we need to clarify the goal.
- First of all, let’s look at the numbers.

⚠️ 慎用或限用：
- Firstly… Secondly… Thirdly…
更像雅思写作模板、教科书风格。考试可以，日常场景用多了，味道有点“塑料”。

我后来总结了一句话，挺管用：

“firstly”不是错，只是有时候太像你在向考官而不是向人说话。

二、为什么“first of all”听起来更有人情味？

有一阵子，我特别爱说“First of all”。
开口闭口：

First of all, I wanna say…
First of all, thank you for coming…

因为我发现：
“First of all”带点铺垫感，像中文里的“首先呢，我先说一点…”，
尤其适合那种你要引出一段比较重要内容、或者想显得有点礼貌的时候。

比如：

表达感谢、开场白：
First of all, thank you for your time today.
First of all, I really appreciate your help.
开始说明一个复杂问题：
First of all, let’s make one thing clear.
First of all, this is not about blame.

你看，“First of all”一出来，气氛就有点“严肃但不僵硬”。
不像“First”那样干脆利落，它更圆润一点，像是说：

“别急，我接下来要说的，是有点分量的。”

总结一下小区别：

First :
干脆、直接、节奏快。
很适合列步骤、列观点。
比如： First, we need more data.
First of all :
带铺垫、语气更“人说话”。
适合重要开头、谢谢别人、讲道理之前。
比如： First of all, I’m not accusing anyone.

两者哪个更好？
看你想要的是“干净利落”，还是“铺垫情绪”。

三、除了 first，还有很多“首先”的另类表达

有时候你应该刻意不用 first。
为什么？因为人总有点情绪，而英语里表达“首先”，有一堆带情绪、带态度的小短语，很好用。

1）to begin with：有点“从头说起”的味道

场景感：
你跟朋友吐槽一件事，越说越生气，然后冷静一下，说：

“To begin with, he didn’t even ask us.”

这个“to begin with”就不是单纯“首先”的意思，
它有点——

“先别急说其他的，最开头最根本的问题是……”

更多例子：

To begin with, we don’t even know what the client really wants.
To begin with, I never agreed to this plan.

这时候如果你换成 “First” 也不是错，但味道淡了。

2）in the first place：有点“早就不该这样”的感觉

我第一次注意到这个短语，是在一部美剧里。
角色吵架的时候说：

“We shouldn’t have done this in the first place.”

这个“in the first place”就非常微妙——
不仅仅是“首先”，还有一点“从一开始就”的后悔、抱怨意味。

再看几个例子：

You shouldn’t have lied in the first place.
Why didn’t you tell me in the first place?

你可以理解为：

“一开始你就应该/不应该这么做。”
带点情绪在里面。不适合写严肃论文，但在对话、吐槽、情绪化表达里，超好用。

3）for a start：特别口语，适合聊天、吐槽

这个表达也很有画面感。
想象你在咖啡馆跟朋友抱怨某个奇葩同事：

“He’s rude, he’s lazy, and he never shows up on time — that’s three reasons not to work with him, for a start.”

for a start有点像：

“就先说这么几条吧，还不止这些呢。”

再举两个：

I don’t like the place. It’s too noisy, the service is slow, and the food is cold, for a start.
We can’t do this. We don’t have the budget, or the team, for a start.

非常口语、非常碎碎念式，非常真实。

四、几个“反直觉”的点：别被中文误导了

1）“at first”和“first”不是一回事

很多人一开始（包括我）很容易混：

at first
first

我以前写过一句话：

At first, we need to analyze the data.
结果被老外同事划掉。

“At first” 表示“起初、最开始的时候（后来情况变了）”：

At first, I didn’t like the idea, but later I changed my mind.
At first, everything seemed fine.

而我们说“首先，我们需要做这个”——
不能用 at first，要用 first / first of all / to begin with：

First, we need to analyze the data.
First of all, we need to analyze the data.

所以你可以记成：

“at first” = 起初，当时的第一阶段（后面很可能有对比转折）
“first” = 首先，列步骤/观点用的

2）不是每个“首先”都要翻出来

这点很关乎“英语思维”。

中文里我们太喜欢讲：

首先，其次，然后，最后……

但英文里，很多时候可以更干脆，直接说重点，不需要每个步骤都标一个“首先”。

比如中文：

首先，我们需要统一目标。
其次，我们要确认时间表。

英文完全可以变成：

We need to align on the goal and then agree on a timeline.

或者：

We need to do two things: align on the goal and agree on a timeline.

没有 first，也一点不违和。
所以遇到“首先”，你可以先问自己一句：

这个“首先”，是为了逻辑清晰，还是只是写习惯了？

如果只是习惯——不翻，有时候更自然。

五、不同场景下，“首先的英语”该怎么选？

我给你几种常见场景，你可以对照一下自己常用哪种表达。

场景1：正式汇报 / PPT

氛围：认真、逻辑清晰，但不要太像考试。

你可以：

First, let me walk you through the background.
First of all, let’s look at the key numbers.

如果一定要列出有编号的论点：

First, …
Second, …
Finally, …

避免整套 Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly…，尤其是开口说的时候。

场景2：工作邮件

你要跟同事解释一件事，层次分明，但又不想太做作。

First of all, thank you for your quick response.
First, I’d like to clarify our main objective.
Second, we need to confirm the timeline.

有时也可以直接合并：

We need to do three things: first, clarify the goal; second, confirm the timeline; and third, assign the tasks.

场景3：聊天、吐槽、表达不满

这时候你可以放下“first”的标准模板，用一些更带感的：

To begin with, he didn’t even tell us.
We shouldn’t have trusted him in the first place.
I don’t want to work with them. They’re slow, disorganized, and rude, for a start.

这些短语，自带情绪滤镜。

场景4：演讲开头、彰显态度

你要说“首先，我想谢谢…”、“首先我要说明一点…”

First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone here.
First of all, let me make one thing clear.
First of all, this is not about blaming anyone.

这里用 “First of all” 会比裸的 “First” 更有人味儿，更“像在对着人讲话”。

六、如果你真的想把“首先的英语”用得漂亮，我的建议只有两个

1）少背模板，多听真人说话

看多一点：

YouTube 演讲
美剧、访谈节目
真实会议里的表达

你会发现：
几乎没人像作文那样整齐划一地说：Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly。
大家更随意一点，更活人一点。

2）练习“翻译前，先想删掉哪几个‘首先’”

每次你写中文句子时，如果是这一挂：

首先……
其次……
然后……
最后……

你先问自己：
- 哪些“首先/其次”是真的为了逻辑？
- 哪些只是你写东西时的“口头禅”？

那些只是口头禅的，翻译成英文时，直接砍掉。
你会发现，你的英文瞬间清爽很多。
